Computer Configurations for Inteiror Architecure Program

The following proceedures are to be completed so you can access the Interior Architecture and effectivly organize your work. THE FOLLOWING INSTRUCTIONS ARE FOR WINDOWS 2000 ONLY


Setting password protection on your computer. (Only requires setting one time.)

You must set up your password protection in the following manner to be able to connect to Interior Architecture server. The password you enter below has also been entered into the server so you can be connected automatically when you start up your computer. This will assist when you are posting web pages.

If you are setting up a new computer with out customized settings follow steps 1-17. If you have a computer with customized settings such as custom desktop graphics follow steps 18-29.

NEW COMPUTER NO-CUSTOM SETTINGS
1. Go to Start - settings - control panel.
2. Double Click on Users and Passwords
3. Select (place a checkmark in the box) "Users must enter a username and password to use this computer."
4. Click on Add…
5. Enter your Oak ID for your user name.
6. Enter your full name
7. You may skip Description.
8. Select next.
9. Enter the password provided to you by the interior architecture program.
10. Confirm the password by typing it again.
11. Select next.
12. Select Other
13. Select Administrator in the options box next to the Other button.
14. Select finish
15. Select Apply in the Users and Passwords Window.
16. Select OK in the Users and Passwords Window.
17. Restart your computer and log on with your new username and password settings.

COMPUTER WITH EXISTING CUSTOM SETTINGS (Sip if you completed steps 1-17)

18. Go to Start - settings - control panel.
19. Double Click on Users and Passwords
20. Select (place a checkmark in the box) "Users must enter a username and password to use this computer."
21. Double click on the name corresponding to the Log On name you have your settings.
22. Change the user name to your Oak ID.
23. Select Apply
24. Select OK
25. In the Users and Passwords window click on your Oak ID name once.
26. Click Set Password
27. Enter and confirm the password that was provided to you by the Interior Architecture Program.
28. Select OK
29. Select OK in the Users and Passwords window.


Setting Network Configurations on Restart (Only requires setting one time.)

The following instructions tell your computer how to connect to the internet. If the Getting Started with Widows 2000 is already on your desk top follow instructions 1-13. If you do not see Getting Started with Widows 2000 follow instructions 14- 18.

Instructions if Getting Started with Widows 2000 automatically launch.

1. Click on the text "Connect to the Internet" in the Getting Started with Widows 2000 window.
2. The internet Wizard will appear. Select "I want to set up my Internet connection manually…"
3. Select The Next Button
4. Select I connect through a local area network (LAN)
5. Select Next
6. Select Automatic "Discover of proxy server (Recommended)"
7. Select Next
8. Select No when prompted to set up an email account.
9. Select Next
10. Select Finish
11. Your browser should start automatically - Close the browser.
12. In the "Getting Started with Widows 2000" window deselect the Show this screen at start up.
13. Click on Exit.

Instructions for connecting to the internet if Getting Started with Widows 2000 does not appear on your desk top automatically. (Skip if you completed steps 1-13)

14. Go to Start - settings - control panel.
15. Double click on the internet options icon.
16. Select the connections tab.
17. Click the setup button.
18. Follow steps 2-10 above under Instructions if Getting Started with Widows 2000 automatically launches.


Setting up your computer for file sharing on the network. (Only requires setting one time)

By completing these instructions you will be able to access the files on your computer from other computers in the building such as the computer lab. Access to your computer will be protected with a password.

1. Right Click on the My Documents folder on the desktop and select properties
2. Select the Sharing Tab
3. Select Share this folder
4. Click on New Share
5. Type "Your Last Name" in the Share Name.
6. Click on Permissions
7. Click on Add
8. In the list of users double click on the name the corresponds to your Oak Email ID.
9. Click on OK
10. Place a checkmark in the Full Control Allow Box.
11. Select Apply
12. Select OK
13. Select OK in the New Share window.
14. Select Apply in the My Documents Properties window
15. Select OK in the Win My Documents Properties window



Giving a Unique Name to your Computer on the Network (Only requires setting one time. This procedure may have been completed when you initially set up your computer.)

Following this procedure allows you to see your computer on the network.

1. Go to Start - settings - control panel.
2. Double click on the System Icon.
3. Click on the Network Identification Tab at the top of the System Properties Window.
4. Click on the properties button.
5. Enter Your Last Name in the Computer Name Option


Setting your Workgroup Preferences on your computer. (Only requires setting one time.)

Following this procedure tells your computer to link up with the Interior Architecture server. This is important is transferring files from your computer to the server.

1. Go to Start - settings - control panel.
2. Double click on the System Icon.
3. Click on the Network Identification Tab at the top of the System Properties Window.
4. Click on the properties button.
5. Enter "INTERIOR ARCH" under Workgroup:
6. Click on OK.
7. Click on OK again in the Systems Properties Window
8. Go to Start - Shutdown and restart your computer.


Creating a Shortcut to the Ia server on your desktop. (Only requires setting one time.)

This procedure allows for quick access to the Interior Architecture server.

1. Double Click in the "My Network Paces" icon on your desktop.
2. Double Click on the "Computers Near Me" Icon
3. Drag the Icon labeled Ia to your computer desktop. (You will be told that "You can not move or copy this item to this location. Do you want to create a shortcut to this item instead?) Click on Yes.

Now you can double click on the server icon from your desktop and access files on the server similar to your own hard drive.


Organizing your computer for saving files.

Make sure that you have completed all of the above steps in setting up your computer. From now on you should follow two rules.

1. Always log onto your computer with the Oak ID and Interior Architecture Password
2. Always save project files/documents in the My Documents folders. (You can create folders inside of the My Documents folder, but all school work should be saved somewhere inside of the root folder My Documents.)

To further assist in the organization of your computer please set up the My Documents folder please complete the following.

Creation of a Local Web Page Folder

1. Open the My Documents folder by double clicking on the desktop icon.
2. Right click inside of the My Documents window that is not on an icon.
3. Select New - Folder
4. Name the folder "HCIA Web Pages"
5. Double Click on the HCIA Web Pages folder.
6. Right click inside the HCIA Web Pages folder widow and select New Folder. Label the folder with the course name, such as HCIA201.
7. Repeat step six as necessary to add folders in the HCIA Web Pages folder.

NOTE: You must be disciplined to only save web documents in the HCIA Web Pages folder. Do not save form-z, Power Point, word or any files or other information not needed for your web page in this folder. Information and files located in this folder will be copied onto the server. If information other than that needed for your web page is placed in this folder it will be transferred to the server and take up valuable hard drive space.

Creation of a Projects Documents Folder.

1. Open the My Documents folder by double clicking on the desktop icon.
2. Right click inside of the My Documents window that is not on an icon.
3. Select New - Folder
4. Name the folder "Class Projects"
5. Double Click on the Class Projects folder
6. Inside the class projects folder Right click and make folders corresponding to classes that you are enrolled. For example HICA 201
7. In side of each class folder it is strongly recommended that you create assignment folders to assist in organizing your work. Make additional folders as necessary.

NOTE: Save any HICA course work other than web pages to this location. When saving in applications such as form-z make sure that you choose the My Documents - Class Projects - location when saving files. Make additional folders as necessary to keep work organized.
